Hi. This is April with your revenue recovery minute. Today, we're talking about government reimbursement. What is government reimbursement?
It's where we can look for different programs to help us recoup some revenue that might otherwise leak out of our hospitals or health systems.
The first one is transfer DRG.
So occasionally in these situations where a patient is transferred to another facility for care, you may be owed a hundred percent if the patient never presents where they're going. So that's one way that you can recover some of the revenue that might be leaking out. Second is Medicare bad debt. If the patient doesn't pay their responsibility for Medicare, there are options to help you recoup some of the revenue that otherwise might be written off to bad debt.
The third one is Medicare disproportionate share. So depending on the community that you serve, you may be welcome or entitled to additional revenue reimbursement that otherwise would not be available to you. And then finally, there's shadow billing, IME and GME, any of those medical education reimbursements. There are definitely government programs that can help you recoup some of the revenue there as well.
From a best practice perspective, a best practice government reimbursement program might contain great reporting and great analytics so you can identify where your problem areas are, get ahead of them, and as you start to make improvements, you can actually see the result of that work. And secondly, it would also include automation wherever you can reduce human error and become more efficient as part of your revenue management program, that's your best bet.
Thanks, and have a great day.
